The French composer Benjamin Godard (1849-95) was actually a violinist, but these late studies show how well he also understood the piano. His Op. 149 comprises four volumes of studies, the second volumen being the six 'Etudes Mélodiques' from which this piece comes. The title of this piece is very evocative, and does not translate easily inte English (Twilit Gondola-Song' is the best I can come up with. The German subtitle in my edition 'Abend am See' (Evening on the water) does not seem to come close to the French. UK viewers of a certain age might agree with me that the theme is reminiscent of the old 'Fry's Turkish Delight' TV ads. The style is similar to that of Chaminade, and like her works, Godard's piano pieces are enjoying a minor revival on disc and in the concert hall. --------------------------------------- Played by Phillip Sear http://www.psear.co.uk
