Congressman Schiff spoke on the House floor in support of a bill to reauthorize and reform the State Department. The text of the bill includes legislation Rep. Schiff introduced earlier this year called the Daniel Pearl Freedom of the Press Act. The Daniel Pearl Act is named in honor of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl who was kidnapped and murdered by terrorists in Pakistan in 2002. It would establish an annual State Department report on press freedom worldwide and create a grant program aimed at strengthening independent media around the world.
