After careful deliberation researching this draft over the past month or so I feel I have the knowledge needed to put together a reasonable mock draft. I do not feel the need to conjure up ridiculous trades in the drafts anticipation in order for the Cowboys to have the ammunition to draft anyone they so choose. Looking at this realistically I see Dallas trading and stockpiling future premium picks. I also see us using our multiple picks as ammunition to trade up in the middle rounds and ensuring we add guys we really like rather than letting the draft fall to us. So who do we like? The top four picks in my mock have all recently visited Valley Ranch. NFL teams are able to host up to 30 players before the draft in a final preparation. I feel it is safe to say that our Day One picks will be two or more of the guys that have visited. The list is available below. http://www.dallasnews.com/sharedcontent/dws/spt/football/cowboys/stories/041809dnspocowlede.3b83844.html Here is the mock draft with my take on each pick. A brief scouting report from CBS's NFL Draft coverage is also provided. I have attempted to have videos from each of these guys on my profile. Rnd 2 #51 Darcel Mcbath DB Texas Tech - My Take- - We have an obvious need for a coverage safety. We have been trying to find the next Darren Woodson for years now. Woodson was much more than thumper and run enforcer. Mcbath brings a ballhawking mentality and cover skills needed. 3 #69 - Jason Williams LB Western Illinois My take- I see a huge need at Kevin Burnetts position. We have no ILBs with any sort of speed or cover ability for the nickel. We need a guy who may have to contend with the likes of the RBs that are quick receivers next season. The list includes Westbrook twice, Portis, Reggie Bush, Darren Sproles, Darren Mcfadden, Selvin Young, Frank Gore, etc. Rnd 4#101 - Sebastian Vollmer OT Houston- My take- First off, I HATE FLOZELL ADAMS. I have no idea how we have put up with him for so long. His only good seasons were in contract years. His penalties have killed drives for far too long. Vollmer reminds me some of Michael Roos. This guy has what it takes to be our future LT....and do it sooner than you think Rnd 4#117 - Patrick Turner WR USC My take- We like our WRs big and Turner fits the bill. Although not fast, is a natural route runner and looks the part. He is so fluid and a joy to watch. At first, when learning of a rather intense interest in Turner, I was like WTF!!? After looking at tape and reading a little more, I have become enamored. I would rather take Turner here than put a premium pick on someone earlier. Rnd 5 #156 - Jason Phillips LB TCU- My take- We have an obvious need for a young, tough, run snuffing ILB. Jasper Brinkley will long be gone so Phillips is next best IMO. Seems made for the position. Rnd 5#166 - Roy Miller DT Texas- My take- I freakin love this guy. A motor and production guy which are the kinds of players that make successful NFL teams. Give me 11 of these guys over the Ricky Jean Francois potential oozing types any day. I see him being a Jason Ferguson type of nosetackle with perhaps a touch more pass rush ability. Rnd 6#172 -Tom Brandstater QB Fresno St My take- Lets face it, we need a QB for the future. I really like Stephen Mcgee but dont want to use a pick on a guy who wont see the field for a few years. The most successful teams are the ones who can develop QBs and either use them or trade them. Green Bay did it for years and now New England is doing likewise. I would like to follow that model. Rnd 6#197 - Robert Brewster OL Ball State My take- I think this guy is strictly a developmental guy for depth. Could he pan? Perhaps. We have been looking extensively at drive blocking types of linemen. Rnd 7#208 - Dan Skuta OLB Grand Valley State- My take- I love this guy. I see some serious versatility and Sp teams capabilities. I know I have a lot of LBs in this mock but we dont have a rush type OLB. This guy could also project to ILB which saves a roster spot for another position. Think a poor mans Mike Vrabel. Rnd 7#210 - Tony Carter DB Florida State My take- Classic measurables pick late. This guy played at a premium school against great competition. If he plays like Alan Ball, we look good. Rnd 7#227 - Julian Edelman QB/WR Kent State My take- We wont let him get to free agency and will snatch him up to groom as a wildcat QB. His versatility and athletic ability will likely allow justification of a roster spot just as a Sp teams maven.
