Elizabeth is torn between Will and Jack. Will is everything she ever imagined to want a man to be, but then she met Jack and he was so much more. Dangerous, unpredictable, exciting, challenging... She felt herself drawn to him from the first moment, he could somehow get to her in a way Will never could. She tried to fight this feeling but she failed. Now she has dreams (or fantasies) about Jack and about a life where she doesn't have to be ashamed of her love for him. Will finds out about her feelings and leaves her so that she can be happy, but it only makes Liz feel more guilty, because it shows how much Will cares about her. She is even angry at him for giving up so easily and not fighting for what they had. She knows she can never be truly happy with Jack, not in this life, not with these feelings of guilt, shame and remorse. So she leaves him on the ship to die and then commits suicide (though that's not shown in the movie).
