Press Conference for Russian journalists. On August 13, GI signatory Dr. Samih El Abed met with Israeli Russian-speaking journalists. The press conference was held at the Geneva Initiative offices in Tel Aviv. On August 13, GI signatory Samih El Abed (Ph.D) met with Israeli Russian-speaking journalists. The press conference was held at the Geneva Initiative premises and brought together a dozen journalists contributing to Russian-speaking media in Israel. Dr. El Abed defined the current situation, following the Fatah Convention, as new era. According to him most new members of the Central Committee belong to the younger generation, have participated in the Oslo peace process and thus represent good partners for peace. He identified the change in Fatah leadership as well as the international communitys intensive support of reaching a permanent agreement between Israel and Palestine as important factors in realizing the two-state solution. He also highlighted the fact, that both sides need to live up to their obligations as outlined in the Road Map (click here for Road Map). The following issues were also discussed: future of the two-state solution, refugees, the Jewish character of Israel, status of minorities in both future states as well as the new Fatah leaderships attitude towards the Hamas.
