The Canadian Seal "Hunt" is the largest mass-slaughter of marine mammals in the world. They say the reason for "hunting" the seals is because they are slaughtering off the Cod population, which is not true. Cod only makes up a pinhole of their diet. This year Canada planned to slaughter 325,000 baby harp seals, along with adult hooded seals. The baby seals are killed brutally with guns, hakapics, wooden clubs, and over 100 ton vessels (when the charge on to the ice they do not pay any attention to the tiny white fluffballs, smashing there tiny two pound body or so body.) The seals are shot usually in the head at point blank, the seals are in the water and they will swim right up to the blood-red vessels (because of all the seal blood and guts on the bow and hull) due to their natural curiousity. A hakapic is kind of like a picaxe, it is about four feet in length with one side for hooking the seal and one for beating and killing it with. The wooden clubs they use are simple hardwood caveman clubs, it can take seven blows to the head to render a seal uncontious. Alot of the baby seals are kicked in face and then skinned alive. There are fisheries and ministeries "officers" who are out on the ice to say what is illegal slaughter and what is legal slaughter, most of them come from sealing families and have done many Illegal sealing violations and usually say "I saw nothing" and smile with there evil grin. I recall one time when Captain Paul Watson was being held down by a muscular sealer after being thrown down in ice-cold waters and dragged out, a sealers was holding a harp seal pup down (he hadn't hurt the seal before that at all before and skinning a seal alive is completely illegal) and began skinning it alive... Captain Watson said "He cant do that, arrest him!" he said to the "officer" and the evil bastard smiled his evil grin and said "I didn't see anything." Sealers have protested Sea Shepherd yelling in their mob "Seals are ment to be clubbed! not cuddled!" which 85% of people you meet would say that is inhumane and cruel. Sealers have "greeted" us at port drunken and with the intent to physically harm us, RCMP (Royal Canadian Mounted Police) officers have seen mobs attack us and choose not to do anything. The coast guard has rammed our vessel and illegally stormed the Farley Mowat with weapons and harmed our crew. They love to throw tear gas at our vessels. Back on track here shall we? Anyways 200,000 seals were saved this year (sea shepherd could not be on the ice) thanks to the brilliant conservationists out on the ice this year. Sealing has gone all the way to the first Inuet (most of you know them as esk-omos) which of dates back before the 1700's where killing seals was a certain need on the bases for survival. Then to the Europeans arival where the mass-slaughtering will range anywhere from 50,000 all the way to over 200,000 seal pups killed... To modern day where killing seals is not needed for survival, considering that we have all the technology that we could use to find substitutes for the products that seals are slaughtered for which includes Omega-3, seal oil, and fur coats. Most of the victims are slaughtered before they can even swim.... The seals "white coat" is not even white, it is translusant. Which it gets the reflection from the snow making it appear white, it is acually a living solar blanket which makes it prized for coats of all soarts... The current quota for seals is 325,000....
