This is a series of gameplay vids I'm doing highlighting overlooked games for the various consoles I own. This is played on a PS2 with Texture smoothing on. Rising Zan is one of those extremely weird, and out-there games. I guess the best way to describe it's core gameplay is diet Devil may Cry. With it's mixture of sword play, and gun play, and even a mode similar to Dante's Devil mode, Rising Zan plays like a precursor to the DMC series in some ways. In many ways this game was ahead of it's time. Not just because the previously mentioned DMC style gameplay, but it also has quick time events. Not that I'm fond of QTE's, but they seem to be all the rage these days. One of the most entertaining aspects of the game is the fact that it doesn't take itself seriously. It's story, and concept alone are goofy, laughable, and entertaining in the it's so bad it's good way. Even the theme song fits in this game. It's terrible, yet good in the same way with voice acting to match (though it's still a lot better than Resident Evil's, but very few games could claim to be worse in that category). Don't let the lighthearted approach fool you into thinking this game is a cake-walk. When it comes to difficulty, this game is no slouch, and the levels get harder as you go along. In fact the difficulty may be a big turn-off to some gamers out there. Also, the camera can be rather problematic at times in the game, and often times gives off-screen enemies an unfair advantage via cheap hits you don't see coming. The game is also a short 10 levels long, but the difficulty of those levels will keep you from speeding through it. Graphically, it's a PS1 game what do you want? It's not gonna win any beauty contests here, and the controls are solid enough. I don't use the analog stick in the game, I use the D-pad, because there are a number of special sword attacks that you input via the d-pad (which actually works pretty well), and the game apparently shuts off the analog control after every level for some reason. Overall, this game is just weird, but in a good way. If you're looking for something quirky, and niche, or even looking for a solid action title on the PS1, give Rising Zan a try. It's a fun game, and it's definitely one that's overlooked by the majority of PS1 gamers out there. Rising Zan: The Samurai Gunman Is only available on the PS1. Hopefully Sony re-releases it over PSN, so more people will have access to this truly weird and entertaining game. This one has cult classic written all over it.
