During the Cold War, tens of thousands of Americans worked across the nation to build atomic weapons for their country's defense system. From mining the uranium ore, building the various components that made up these weapons, to the decommissioning and dismantling of these nuclear facilities. Today, many are paying a high price for their patriotism. Thousands have become sick and an equal amount has already died from illnesses associated with these activities. The Americans who built the nation's nuclear weapons are still fighting a Cold War. Thousands have applied for the compensation that congress established for them in 2000. But most have never seen a dime. They did top-secret work that exposed them to radiation, chemicals, heavy metals and other poisons. For half a century, the federal government's official policy was to fight any workers who claimed job-related illness, often spending tens of millions of tax dollars annually to do so. The government at times absolutely denied that the workers faced undue danger. It was a flat-out-lie.
