The Vote on Account which includes the Governments expenditure for the first four months of next year was approved in Parliament with a majority of 47 votes. 125 members voted for the Resolution. Only 78 votes were cast against it. All Government constituent parties voted for the Resolution. The UNP, the JVP and the TNA opposed. Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickramanayake queried as to what kind of an environment was prevailing in the world when the Government was presenting the Vote on Account. There is a certain trend in the world where the advanced countries were attempting to dominate the small countries. He opined that the country faced ruthless terrorism for 30 years and has now entered a development era after eliminating the terrorism. What the Government needs is to make the country self-sufficient. Minister Dinesh Gunawardena said the Opposition had mentioned in the debate not to enter into any agreement or accept any investment. The only point they raised was to reject new policies. He said the rural economy has resuscitated the national economy. The President had recognised the path towards development. Parliamentarian Wimal Weerawansa noted that the people, specially the working class will not have to wait until April when the Budget will be presented to receive the relief. Earlier it was said that the Budget was not being presented as IMF conditions had to be met. He pointed out that it was incorrect.
