On September 11, 1776, Lord Howe, commander in chief of the British forces in the Thirteen Colonies, and his brother General Sir William Howe, commander of all land forces, met at Christopher Billopp's house with Benjamin Franklin, John Adams, and Edward Rutledge among others to negotiate amnesty and terms of peace in return for ending the American Revolution. The Colonist leaders politely but firmly declined, leading to another seven years of the Conflict. That house still stands today now known as The Conference House, and was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1966.
