The movie made Guru Dutt rich, although he lost most of the money in the failure of Kagaz Ke Phool. The movie was released in 1957, having been produced and directed by Guru Dutt, who also acted in the lead role (he wanted Dilip Kumar, but the actor declined). The movie was written by Abrar Alvi, and starred Guru Dutt, Waheeda Rehman, Mala Sinha, Rehman, and Johnny Walker. The movie had music by SD Burman, and lyrics by Sahir Ludhiyanvi.
