One of the biggest strengths of the Cowboys over the course of the last four seasons has been the defensive line. In particular, the drafting of lineman. Those linemen are the glue that keeps the D together. The likes of Marcus Spears, Chris Canty, and Jay Ratliff have been instrumental in keeping the Cowboys solid on D. The other lineman however have not stepped up and shown they are ready for primetime. Although the potential is there from the likes of Stephen Bowen and Jason Hatcher, the production apparently is causing a little concern. Everywhere I read, we are looking at linemen. Despite being a strength, the brass is not sold on the depth. In their defense, Spears has been merely average and Canty is now in New York. Igor Olshanksy should be an able replacement however. A concern for the Cowboys is likely the lack of a true 34 nose tackle. Ratliff is better served as an end despite being dominant at times at the nose. In particular, is the running game concerns. Too many hands were being put on the likes of Zach Thomas and we were not dominant in stopping the run like we were the pass. So who are we looking at? Who are the prospects and when will be be looking at them? Below are some of the prospects and some projections. Ricky Jean Francois- This name is coming up a lot. He is a junior coming out who projects as a boom or bust guy. Was MVP of BCS title game for LSU but has serious maturity issues. Being our ties with Les Miles, we should have a good beat on him. I view his as a fourth round prospect and a rather strong one for us to be selecting. Jarron Gilbert- This guy is skyrocketing up draft boards after post season workouts and all star games. A huge prospect at 6'5 288 lbs. He is similar in my view to Jason Hatcher and I do not expect us to snag him as he will cost us the 51 slot. His upside is tremendous however. Rashon Harris- This guy should catch more eyes than he is. Any time an interior lineman has 9 TFLs and 47 tackles, it means he is pretty active. Roy Miller- We supposedly have a very keen interest in this guy. He seems to have the character we could use and is very mature. Looks more like a nose tackle type. I would not be surprised to see us land him in the 5th round. He is my fave lineman at the moment. 11 TFLs and 5.5 sacks and improvement every year are things that stand out. Fili Moala- This guy is a potential beast. I do not think he fits the 34 however. I see him as a 43 DT in the mold of Kevin Williams (not as good, just size and pass rush ability). Ron Brace- Outside of Miller, this is my guy. He will likely go in round 2 so we would have to use a premium pick on him. Nosetackles to me are guys that do not justify the pick. I would still be happy with him on the squad however.
