Inspired by true events in the midst of the 2000 election, AMERICAN VIOLET tells the astonishing story of Dee Roberts (critically hailed newcomer Nicole Beharie), a 24 year-old African American single mother of four young girls living in a small Texas town who is barely making ends meet on a waitress salary and government subsidies. On an early November morning while Dee works a shift at the local diner, the powerful local district attorney (Academy Award® nominee Michael OKeefe) leads an extensive drug bust, sweeping her Arlington Springs housing project with military precision. Police drag Dee from work in handcuffs, dumping her in the squalor of the womens county prison. Indicted based on the uncorroborated word of a single and dubious police informant facing his own drug charges, Dee soon discovers she has been charged as a drug dealer. Even though Dee has no prior drug record and no drugs were found on her in the raid or any subsequent searches, she is offered a hellish choice: plead guilty and go home as a convicted felon or remain in prison and fight the charges thus, jeopardizing her custody and risking a long prison sentence. Despite the urgings of her mother (Academy Award® nominee Alfre Woodard), and with her freedom and the custody of her children at stake, she chooses to fight the district attorney and the unyielding criminal justice system he represents. Joined in an unlikely alliance with an ACLU attorney (Tim Blake Nelson) and former local narcotics officer (Will Patton), Dee risks everything in a battle that forever changes her life and the Texas justice system. AMERICAN VIOLET also stars Emmy Award® winner Charles S. Dutton and Xzibit. 10 Alfre Woodard is currently shooting the NBC series, MY OWN WORST ENEMY along side Christian Slater as will be seen in Tyler Perrys THE FAMILY THAT PREYS along side Kathy Bates in September. Woodard was recently seen in the Hallmark Hall of Fame TV movie PICTURES OF HOLLIS WOODS, costarring Sissy Spacek, for which she has been nominated for an Emmy. She starred along side Antonio Banderas in New Lines TAKE THE LEAD and played Betty Applewhite on the ABC drama DESPREATE HOUSEWIVES. Additional recent credits include SOMETHING NEW, the Hallmark hall of Fame presentation of THE WATER IS WIDE, BEAUTY SHOP opposite Queen Latifah, THE FORGOTTEN with Julianne Moore, RADIO with Cuba Gooding Jr., Ed Harris and Deborah Winger, THE CORE, THE SINGING DETECTIVE with Mel Gibson and Robert Downey Jr., and Universals K-PAX opposite Kevin Spacey and Jeff Bridges. Other credits include Showtimes HOLIDAY HEART (for which she was nominated for a 2000 Best Actress Golden Globe Award), New Line Cinemas LOVE N BASKETBALL, Wesley Snipes production of DOWN IN THE DELTA directed by Dr. Maya Angelou, Gurinder Chadhas WHATS COOKING and Lawrence Kasdans MUMFORD. Always versatile, Woodard has lent her voice to animation, portraying the cheetah mother in Paramount/Nickelodeons feature THE WILD THORNBERRIES Movie as well as a lemur named Plio in the summer blockbuster DINOSAUR. A four-time Emmy Award winner, Woodard was first honored in 1984 for her performance as the grieving mother of a child killed by a police officer in the acclaimed NBC series HILL STREET BLUES. She won her second Emmy Award for her portrayal of a rape victim on the pilot for L.A. LAW. The same year she was nominated for her role in the John Sayles telefilm, UNNATURAL CAUSES. Her third Emmy earned was for Best Actress in a television mini-series or movie in HBOs MISS EVERS BOYS (for which she also received a Golden Globe Award, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a cable Ace Award). Most recently, Woodard received an Emmy in 2003 for her guest starring role on THE PRACTICE. Previous nominations include two in consecutive years for the PBS production WORDS BY HEART and for her continuing role on the popular series ST. ELSEWHERE. Woodard was nominated in 1988, again for ST. ELSEWHERE and in 1990 for the Disney Channel telefilm, A MOTHERS COURAGE: THE MARY THOMAS STORY. In addition, she was honored with an ACE Award for her portrayal of Winnie Mandela in the HBO presentation MANDELA, starring Danny Glover.
