John Russell ARNP watches and listens to reports about propofol being found in Michael Jackson's home following his death amid reports of his RN Cheri Lynn stating that Mr. Jackson was asking her about how he might obtain Propofol to "help him battle his insomnia" several months ago. As a person who has worked for years in critical care using propofol to sedate critically ill patients who are intubated and on ventilators (breathing machines), I am well acquainted with its use. This drug is not controlled in the same manner as opiates like morphine or oxycodone because to use propofol outside of an acute care environment would certainly risk death due to central nervous system depression (Stop Breathing). As someone who uses this drug frequently in the intensive care setting, you learn how to sedate patients just enough to keep them comfortable depending on their condition. Propofol is not a drug that is carried at your local CVS! It is ONLY available for use in hospitals and surgery centers where appropriately trained personnel together with proper equipment for dosing and resuscitation is available in order to use it safely. How Michael Jackson came to have Propofol in his residence certainly raises big questions for authorities. In my mind, as the video denotes, I have raised some questions in order to focus the collective mind of the public on cause, effect and consequences. The mere thought of a pharmacy dispensing $50,000 dollars per month of "prescription" drugs should raise the eyebrow of even the most incurious. WHO is minding the store? That is a TON of drugs... for one individual.... The DEA will be on that. I hope that this little video w/ some commentary and questions accompanying the fine work of MSNBC and CNN will prove helpful to fans of Michael Jackson and assist them in working through their shock and grief. I for one logged a lot of quality time in the 1980's listening to the wonderful work of Michael Jackson during that time. RIP Michael.... John Russell, MS/ARNP, Acute Care, MBA/HCSM
