Of course, they throw the second battle right after the first one; and you can't go back later to do it, you have to do it before facing Fugue. Did more grinding but it wasn't quite as extreme as the first fight. Again, a bit of luck for the beginning, but if you can get the pirates out of the way quick enough it's much less stressful. Definitely make sure you've got the guarding down; Dead Man's Tale can one shot you if it's unguarded (I got very lucky, especially at 2:54 in this video).
