[Please read] Dramatic intensity unrivalled out West. James Stewart was the most intense actor ever to portray a cowboy lead in movie Westerns. Director Anthony Mann, a particularly adroit "hydraulic engineer," knew how to dam as well as when to let pour Stewarts deep waters along the course of a conflict-laden dramatic narrative. Together, they lent their fine talents to five superlative "on-location" Westerns: WINCHESTER '73 (1950). Filmed in Tucson, Arizona. BEND OF THE RIVER (1952). Filmed at Timberline and around Mt. Hood, Oregon. THE NAKED SPUR (1953). Filmed mostly in Colorado's Rocky Mountains. THE FAR COUNTRY (1954). Filmed at Jasper and Banff National Parks; Alberta, Canada. THE MAN FROM LARAMIE (1955). Filmed around Santa Fe and Taos, New Mexico. Until creative contention spoiled their working relationship on the set of NIGHT PASSAGE(1957), Stewart and Mann flourished together. Additional team-ups included work on THUNDER BAY (1953), THE GLENN MILLER STORY (1953), and STRATEGIC AIR COMMAND (1955). After splitting, Mann went on to direct four other excellent and typically intense Westerns: THE LAST FRONTIER (1955) w/Victor Mature, Anne Bancroft, and Robert Preston. [Mann didnt care for this one, though I think it quite good.] THE TIN STAR (1957) w/Henry Fonda and Anthony Perkins. Man of the West (1959) w/Gary Cooper, Julie London, Lee J. Cobb, and Jack Lord. CIMARRON (1960) w/Glenn Ford [the only other Western leading man with an intensity to match Stewart's.] Stewart's post-Mann Westerns included three directed by John Ford: TWO RODE TOGETHER (1961) w/Richard Widmark and Shirley Jones. THE MAN WHO SHOT LIBERTY VALANCE (1962) w/John Wayne, Lee Marvin, and Vera Miles. CHEYENNE AUTUMN (1964) w/Richard Widmark, Carroll Baker, Karl Malden, and Ricardo Montalban.
