When watching my old videos, I feel all my blurred memories revived! Before this MMA phenomenon even appeared, I had been training and teaching all the essential disciplines like Kung-Fu, Boxing, Kickboxing, and Jujitsu. I wanted to show my students that each of these different disciplines is only a piece of the larger puzzle, and the importance of learning and combining all of these styles rather than using one exclusively. Despite the fact that there are some talented fighters in MMA(UFC), it seems to me that most of these guys are missing a very essential component of a true martial artist: the martial arts philosophy. Few (if any) fighters go beyond the fighting aspect to grasp a deeper understanding of the history, purpose, and philosophy that completes the martial arts package. I do like and respect MMA, but I also think the sport has succeeded in separating the fighting aspect from the philosophy of martial arts. And without that philosophy, that deeper understanding, can it really still be called martial arts? Many people can be fighters but not many can truly comprehend the essence of martial arts.
