On the north shore of Cornwall, the town of Newquay is a major urban holiday center, crowded with hotels, B&Bs, caravans and condominiums. Just a short distance northwards, however, lies an undeveloped, natural coastline with windswept farmland, craggy sea cliffs and a restless seascape. At Watergate Bay , a broad sandy beach extends for several km. along the coast, and advancing tides generate row upon row of white-capped breaking waves, much to the delight of wet-suited surfers. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Watergate_Bay Further up the coast at Bedruthan Steps, erosion has detached large rocky outcrops from the tall, shoreline cliffs. At low tide, the rocky pinnacles rise from a sandy beach, and a steep path (142 steps) from the clifftop provides hiking access to this spectacular mix of rock and sand. At high tide, however, the beach disappears under turbulent waves that crash against the base of the eroded cliff. At such times, the seascape can only be viewed from the South West Coast Path http://www.swcp.org.uk/walk/intro.html , and the National Parks parking area at Carnewas is a convenient starting point for day hikes along this wild stretch of the Cornish coast http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Carnewas_and_Bedruthan_Steps.
