Many talented artists have recorded this haunting reflection of love lost, but none like Sinatra. Actually, he sang "What'll I Do?" only a few times; he said it was just "too hard" emotionally. And it's easy to understand why: this song is devastatingly heartbreaking. The Columbia recording posted here is from 1947, and a youthful, tender voiced Sinatra. The '40s found him evolving artistically and he had yet to fully channel the vocal command he magnificently mastered at Capitol Records. Still, the song is wonderful--and incredibly touching. Frustratingly, Sinatra's defining interpretation of "What'll I Do?" is blocked on YouTube. It's a superb 1962 Reprise recording originally found on Sinatra's underrated "All Alone" album that definitely is worth searching out. Oh, the incomparable Irving Berlin composed "What'll I Do?" Believe it or not, the song's initial inspiration was the death of his mother. (What'll I do without her? Honestly, I still have no idea...) The seldom heard verse is: Gone is the romance that was so divine 'Tis broken and cannot be mended You must go your way And I must go mine But now that our love dreams have ended... What'll I do When you are far away And I am blue What'll I do? What'll I do when I am wondering who Is kissing you What'll I do? What'll I do with just a photograph To tell my troubles to? When I'm alone With only dreams of you That won't come true What'll I do?
