This is one of my least favourite Taylor films. The script is weak , the story is trite and the characters predictable. As for his performance, always self-effacing Taylor confessed to Gardner that he thought it was one of the worst movies he'd ever made. I wouldn't say it was of the worst movies he'd ever made, but assuredly it doesn't count among his career highlights, ditto the rest of the cast, a great one by the way, but whose talent was wasted. What makes the film stand out is the gorgeous black and white photography by Joseph Ruttenberg and the vibrant score by Miklós Rózsa. Robert Taylor is Rigby, an US government agent sent to Carlota ("an island off the coast of Central America") in order to investigate and break up a smuggling gang which is trafficking in contraband war surplus materials. No longer after arriving in Carlota, where he is posing as a sportsman, he meets Tug Hintten (John Hodiak), an alcoholic war veteran, and his wife Elizabeth (Ava Gardner) a singer in a night club, the main suspects. But they are not the only ones. Besides Carwood (Vincent Price), a man he knew on board the airplane to Carlota, there is a guy called Bealer (Charles Laughton) who follows Rigby like a shadow. Rigby decides to stay close to Hinttens in order to investigate their real activities in the island. But he spends most of the time with Elizabeth falling fatally in love with her... Cast Robert Taylor ... Rigby Ava Gardner ... Elizabeth Hintten Charles Laughton ... J.J. Bealer Vincent Price ... Carwood John Hodiak ... Tugwell 'Tug' Hintten Tito Renaldo ... Emilio Gomez Martin Garralaga ... Pablo Gomez ... and more. Director Robert Z. Leonard Original Music Miklós Rózsa Cinematography Joseph Ruttenberg "The Bribe" can be seen on cable.
