Music/Island Def Jam) myspace.com/uknowbigsean Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. once said that hearing Mahalia Jackson perform a single gospel song was as powerful as ten of his speeches. King believed in the transformative power of music and frequently asked Jackson to perform at his public appearances. F.O.K.U.S. (Fighting Obstacles Knowing Ultimate Success), a student arts organization based in Ann Arbor and New York, shares Dr. King's vision and firmly believes in the arts as a medium for social change. It is in this spirit that F.O.K.U.S. brings emerging artist Janelle Monáe to Ann Arbor as part of the University of Michigan's 23rd annual MLK Symposium. Monáe's distinct blend of imaginative lyrics and futuristic soul grooves has made her an undeniable presence in the current music scene. In spite of not yet releasing a full-length album, Monáe has already garnered a Grammy nomination and praise from some of music's most respected figures. Consider Monáe's performance not only a highlight of the nation's biggest Martin Luther King Symposium, but also a prelude to the Inauguration of President Obama. Forward-thinking artists such as Monáe have embraced Obama's message of hope, and it is reflected in their creative output. Her recent campaign-styled posters featuring the slogan "Imagination Inspires Nations" are proof that Obama's historic victory will continue to resonate in the artistic community. On Friday January 16th, 2009, F.O.K.U.S. invites you to reflect on the legacy of Dr. King, celebrate the Inauguration of Obama, and experience the other-worldly talent that is Janelle Monáe. **************************************** CO-SPONSORED BY: The Office of Academic Multicultural Initiatives, The University of Michigan Museum of Art, The College of Literature, Science, and the Arts (LSA), Office of Multi-Ethnic Student Affairs, MSA-MAC, Ambatana Multicultural Council, the University of Michigan Library, & Arts at Michigan.
