Composed by the talented Billy Strayhorn, the songwriting genius who created many of Duke Ellington's masterpieces--amazingly, "Strays" was just 16-years old when he wrote "Lush Life (originally titled "Life is Lonely"). The song conveys a vast and complex range of emotions countless artists have explored. I think this version from the incredible voice of Chris Connor ranks as one of the very best--as does Johnny Hartman's, which also can found on YouTube. Ms. Connor truly is one of the all-time great jazz vocalists. If you're not familiar with the legendary artist and her extraordinary talent, you're missing out on many marvelous recordings. Ms. Connor sounds surprisingly like another female favorite, June Christy ("The Misty Miss Christy"); yet she breathes a greater depth of feeling and intimacy into all she sings. As for "Lush Life," what undoubtedly would have been the song's greatest recording forever remains one of Frank Sinatra's best-known, uncompleted Capitol projects. On May 29, 1957, Sinatra "canned" 7 songs for his "Only the Lonely" album (he typically recorded 3 per session), but fatigue cut short his "Lush Life" attempt. I have a "from the vaults" session recording of Sinatra singing "Lush Life"; even in its raw unfinished form his performance is stunning. If only he had revisited the song... (I actually thought her poignant smile was that of a great love for me. Stupid me, once again I was wrong...) I used to visit all the very gay places Those come what may places Where one relaxes on the axis of the wheel of life To get the feel of life From jazz and cocktails The men I knew had sad and sullen gray faces With distingué traces That used to be there you could see where they'd been washed away By too many through the day Twelve o'clock tales Then you came along with your siren song to tempt me to madness I thought for awhile that your poignant smile was tinged with the sadness Of a great love for me Ah yes, I was wrong Again, I was wrong... Life is lonely again And only last year everything seemed so sure Now life is awful again A trough full of hearts could only be a bore A week in Paris will ease the bite of it But all I care is to smile in spite of it I'll forget you, I will While yet you are still burning inside my brain Romance is mush Stifling those who strive So I'll live a lush life in some small dive And there I'll be, where Ill rot with the rest Of those whose lives are lonely, too...
