"Joe..." Nick mumbled, smacking his head in ashamement. Nicholas rolled down the hall and knocked gently on the bathroom door. "Joe.. I'm so sorry," he apologized, honestly, "I'm so stupid for saying that.. I know this must be REALLY hard for you to take in.. And I just made it worse.. I'm so sorry." Nick's voice trailed off, his knuckles rythmically hitting the door. He heard muffled sniffling on the otherside. "Please let me in?" Nick petitioned. He heard a small "click" and swung the door open as if he had previously rehearsed this before. He stepped on the bathroom rug and sat next to Joe, who was presently crumbled in a tight ball on the floor. His knees tucked up to his chest, and his face in his knees. "Joe... Talk to me.." Nick murmured. "I'm s-s-scared.." Joe stammered, and Nicholas just came to notice the tears forming in his brother's hazel eyes. "It's okay to be scared. We all are.. I'll help you through this, Joe. You're never alone." Nick assured, putting a warm hand on Joseph's left shoulder. "T-T-Thanks." "No Problem." Suddenly.... "RING!" "Sorry that's my phone," Nick muttered, "Be back in a second." He left the bathroom and dashed into his room, smacking the door shut behind him. He grabbed his phone and ripped it up to his ear, clicking the green button. "Hello?" "Nick.." "Who is this?" Nick questioned. "K-Kevin.." "KEVIN!?" Nick screamed in his thoughts. The voice sounded so raspy and weak, like he hadn't used it in centuries, and his vocal chords were all dried up like raisins. "Nick? You there?" The voice called. "Y-Yeah.. Hi.." Nick choked, not believing his ears. "Look, you're right.. We need to talk.." Kevin whispered, obviously thinking carefully about his choice of words. "Y-Yeah, s-s-sure.." Nick quickly replied, closing his jaw that felt as if it was sinking to the floor. "Where do you want to meet? Can we talk today?" Kevin croaked. "Yeah, today's good.. We can meet at the----ummm.. Cafe on 43rd?" Nick suggested. "Sure, I'll be there in like 15." Kevin mumbled. "Alright, see you there." Nick smiled, shutting his phone, and letting out a breath of relief that his chest had been seizing onto. He couldn't believe what had just happened, he was FINALLY going to speak to Kevin. It was unbelievable, relieving, and at the same time utterly HORRIFYING. "Gotta get ready.." Nick mouthed to himself, pulling on his Nike's and warm jacket. He ran down the steps, practically breaking a leg. "Mom! I'm going to see a friend for a little while! I'll be back soon!" Nick yelled, opening the front door. "Okay sweetie, be careful! Be back by 9:00." Denise called back. "FINE!" he screamed, running out and stuffing his jacket into his face. The cold air hit him like a sudden shock of lightening. He took in a deep breath, letting the air enter his lungs. He had to hurry.. What if Kevin changes his mind? Nicholas raced down the block, panting furiously and coughing by the time his feet had stopped in front of the Cafe doors. He scanned the streets for Kevin or his car. He stood on his toes, begging God to let Kevin show up. Then.. He realized something.. He had left Joe alone, covered in his own salty tears. "Crap.." he sighed.. Mom or Dad could help him.. No big deal.. "Nick?" Someone coughed from the opposite direction. "K-Kevin," whispered Nick, almost breaking into tears of joy, "You came." "Yeah, surprisingly.." He chuckled, running a hand through the same dark curly hair. His sideburns were trimmed neatly, and were now barely noticable. Other than those obvious points, he seemed exactly the same. "Ready to go inside?" Kevin forced a smile, holding the door open. "Yeah.." Nick snapped, pushing inside and sitting at the table near the window. Kevin sat on the other side of the table, rubbing his hands together for warmth.. "Winter's getting closer and closer." he said. Nick nodded, lazily following the cars outside. He didn't know exactly what to say. "Umm.. So.. How are Mom, Dad, Big Rob and Frankie?" Kevin whispered. "Good.. Frankie's gotten big." Nick suddenly grinned, a mental picture of his brother flashing in his brain. Kevin faked another smile. "Mom and Dad have been fussing over--" Nick caught himself quickly. "Over what?" "Umm.. The house.. Constant chores now." "Oh," Kevin sighed, then reluctantly asked the question he was dreading, "And.. J-Joe?" "He's sick." Nick spat, aggravated that Kevin didn't know. Then realized how stupid it was for him to just bring it out into the open like that. "Sick?" Kevin questioned. "Yeah.. Bad case of Strep Throat." "Ahhh.." Kevin nodded, trying to move away from the subject of Joe. "Other than that.. He's doing good.. I guess.." "That's good.." Kevin forced another hesitated smile. Nick felt irratation seethe in him. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ "It's better to be told the truth, than a comforting lie..."
