Neda has become a symbol, an inspiration for people seeking freedom. Why has this Palestinian man, who was killed while engaging in peaceful protest against occupation and oppression, not been mentioned in the mainstream media? Is he not a symbol? On April 17 of this year the small and modest Palestinian village of Bilin (located 7 km West of the city of Ramallah in the occupied West Bank) lost one of its most loved and well-known members. Bassem Ibrahim Abu Rahmah was 30 years old when he was shot in the chest with a tear gas canister by an Israeli soldier. On the day of his death Baseem was non-violently protesting Israels occupation of his land, something which he had been actively doing for the past four years. Joined by Israelis and international peace activists, Bilin villagers participate in non-violent demonstrations against Israels illegal separation barrier and settlements weekly. Despite suffering continuing psychological damage and always facing the threat of physical harm, the villagers and their supporters remain committed to peacefully resisting the Israeli governments colonization of their land through protest as well as through legal action.
