Jenelsie Walden Holloway, C'41, was a professor in the art department at Spelman for 38 years, and served as department chair for two periods, 1952 - 1963 and then 1982 - 1990. A life long advocate of the arts, she was well known for her staunch support of and dedication to the development of African-American art. In 1941, Mrs. Holloway earned a bachelor's degree in art from Spelman, and pursued graduate studies in figurative painting at the Art Institute of Chicago. After college, she chaired arts departments at Prairie View College and Dillard University before returning to Spelman as a teacher. Her daughter, Charnelle Holloway, professor of art at Spelman, pays tribute to her mother during the College's 125th Fonders Day celebration.
