Presidential Candidates and Leaders From All Sectors Join Together to Foster a 'Service Nation' Source: AARP Historic Call to Action on September 11th New Report Enlists Experienced Americans to Solve Our Most Challenging Problems September 2008 (Medialink) - Senators McCain and Obama will be taking part in a presidential forum, followed by a summit with First Lady Laura Bush, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger, Caroline Kennedy, Alma Powell, and Mayor Michael Bloomberg, in a national call to service and comprehensive plan of action launching on September 11th and 12th in New York City. As part of that effort, AARP released a compelling and comprehensive report on the civic attitudes and behaviors of members of the Baby Boom and Silent Generations. The report also includes recommendations on how to harness the experience of the 110 million Americans of these older and wiser generations to help solve some of our country's most challenging problems. The report was authored by Robert Putnam (author of "Bowling Alone"), former Senator Harris Wofford, and John Bridgeland, former Director of USA Freedom Corps. It was released on September 9, in advance of the launch of ServiceNation. The report provides statistics about who is volunteering, why they're doing it, what obstacles they face and recommendations to engage more experience Americans in service, plus surprising findings on how Boomers and the Silent Generation think they're going to leave the world. Talent/Guest: Thomas Nelson, Chief Operating Officer of AARP Thomas C. Nelson is the Chief Operating Officer for AARP. In addition to overall leadership responsibilities, he supervises the strategic planning and corporate diversity offices and works directly with the executives responsible for membership, operations, research, education and outreach, advocacy, volunteers, and AARP's social mission. He has been instrumental in building AARP's highly-regarded grass roots advocacy at the state level. He was the architect of AARP's Executive Councils, the volunteer leadership that sets direction for AARP in the states. His leadership contributions have encompassed not only expanding AARP's state capacity and strengthening its advocacy team, but also broadening volunteer efforts and community service initiatives, and advancing AARP's commitment to diversity through the development of strong relationships with many other organizations. Talent/Guest: John M. Bridgeland, Co-Author of the Report
