July 29, 2009 A semi-truck crashed today when its load of 55,000 pounds of granulated sugar shifted and tipped the rig as it turned onto the Marion Street Bridge. The 2003 Volvo truck was headed south on Commercial Street NE about noon when it crashed turning west onto the bridge, Salem Police Lt. Keith Blair said. The 50-pound bags of sugar that were unsecured on 22 pallets shifted and caused the truck to tilt, police said. The top of the trucks trailer tore and folded around a traffic signal pole, and the rest of the vehicle rested sideways on the concrete barrier at the side of the bridge. Traffic lights were not affected. Police had to divert traffic from the area and intermittently closed the bridge to remove the truck until about 4 p.m., Blair said. Traffic gridlocked in downtown because of the crash and effort to remove the truck. The driver, Philip Combs, 23, of Salem, was not cited for driving with an unsecured load because the truck was not regulated as a commercial vehicle, Blair said. The truck was being driven for Meduri Farms in Dallas, he said. Stacey Barchenger • Statesman Journal • July 29, 2009
