But the film dramatised the real events of March 1944, when 76 allied airmen broke out of a prison camp in central Germany. Seventy-three of the Great Escapers were recaptured and then 50 of them were murdered by the Gestapo. In retribution, an outraged British government appointed a former policeman to hunt down those responsible within the chaos of post-war Germany. ABC TV's The Great Escape: The Reckoning airs Thursday 29 October at 8.30pm on ABC1.
