- The Man Who Would Be King - Movie 1975 - Part 3 of 9 - Training The Army Danny, Peachy and gurkha "Billy Fish" train the troops in preparation for the conquest of Kafiristan. Humorous quotes: Danny: "Now listen to me you beknighted muckers. We're gonna to teach you soldiering - the world's noblest profession. When we've done with you, you'll be able to stand up and slaughter your enemies like civilized men. But first, you'll have to learn to march in step, do the manual of arms without even having to think. Good soldiers don't think, they just obey. Do you suppose if a man thought twice he'd give his life for queen and country - not bloody likely, he wouldn't go near the battlefield. One look at your foolish faces tells me you're going to be crack troops. Oh, him there with the 5 1/2 hat size has the makings of a bloody hero." Peachy: "Now the timing in the British Army has always been: one, two, three. One, two, three." Billy Fish: (interprets to men) Peachy: "Say after me - one, two, three." Billy Fish: (interprets to men) Peachy: "Ready, steady, go." The men: "One, two, three" Lone man: (after others) "One, two, three." Peachy: (to Lone man) "You say it at the same time as all the others, right. (to Billy Fish) Tell him to say it at the same time as all the others." Billy Fish: (interprets to Lone man) Peachy: "Right. Go." (in chorus with the men) "One, two, three." Lone man: "One, two, three." Peachy: (to Billy Fish) "Billy, tell him to say it with the others - with the others. One, two, three. (pause) Right, now ready, steady go." Lone man: (before the other men) "One, two, three." Peachy: (to Lone man) "No, you don't say it before the others. (to Billy Fish) He said it before the others Billy." (to Lone man) "Not before the others, not after the others - with the bloody others. Right. Attention." (And it goes on) - The Man Who Would Be King (film) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Would_Be_King_%28film%29 The Man Who Would Be King is a 1975 film adapted from the Rudyard Kipling story of the same title. It was adapted and directed by John Huston and starred Sean Connery as Daniel Dravot, Michael Caine as Peachey Carnehan, Saeed Jaffrey as Billy Fish , and Christopher Plummer as Kipling (giving a name to the story's anonymous narrator). The Kipling story tells the tale of two rogue British ex-soldiers who set off from 19th century British India in search of adventure, and end up as kings of Kafiristan. The story is believed to have been inspired by the travels of American adventurer Josiah Harlan during the period of the Great Game between Imperial Russia and the British Empire. Shot on location in Morocco, Huston had planned to make the film since the 1950's: originally with Humphrey Bogart and Clark Gable, then Burt Lancaster and Kirk Douglas, and then Robert Redford and Paul Newman — Newman suggested Connery and Caine. Like much of his writing, Kipling's original story is overtly imperialist; in Huston's telling, both East and West have their faults and virtues. In a retrospective review, the New York Times remarked "Gloriously old-fashioned in its approach -- right down to the characters' politically incorrect attitudes toward anyone who isn't one hundred per cent British -- The Man Who Would Be King is pure entertainment in the grand tradition of Gunga Din." Michael Caine has maintained that if any film of his is remembered after his death, it would be The Man Who Would Be King because it is the sort of film that everyone says, even when the film came out, "No-one makes pictures like this any more." - Synopsis http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Would_Be_King_%28film%29#Synopsis - Miscellanea http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Would_Be_King_%28film%29#Miscellanea - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Man_Who_Would_Be_King - The Man Who Would Be King (1975) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0073341/ Director: John Huston Writers: John Huston (screenplay) Gladys Hill (screenplay) Rudyard Kipling (story) Cast: Sean Connery - Daniel Dravot Michael Caine - Peachy Carnehan Christopher Plummer - Rudyard Kipling Saeed Jaffrey - Billy Fish Doghmi Larbi - Ootah Jack May - District Commissioner Karroom Ben Bouih - Kafu Selim Mohammad Shamsi - Babu Albert Moses - Ghulam Paul Antrim - Mulvaney Graham Acres - Officer The Blue Dancers of Goulamine - Dancers Shakira Caine - Roxanne Nadia Atbib - Dancer (uncredited) Yvonne Ocampo - Dancer (uncredited) Gurmuks Singh - Sikh Soldier (uncredited) Kimat Singh - Sikh Soldier (uncredited) -
