Charlie Chaplin stars in this 1915 silent which he wrote and directed for the Essanay Film Mfg. Co. (S&A). S&A Studio was founded by G K Spoor and G M "Bronco Billy" Anderson in Chicago in 1907. Anderson starred in 376 Bronco Billy westerns made by S & A and in all, 450 films were made between 1907 and 1914 in Chicago when 4 of 5 silent films were made there. S & A opened its' "west" studios to take advantage of the more dependable outdoor weather for the Bronco Billy westerns. It was at this point, in 1915, that Chaplin was hired away from Mack Sennett's Keystone Studios. Chaplin made 14 comedies for Essanay, the most famous being "The Tramp" in 1915. Appearing at 5:50 6:36 and 7:01 in this film as "Lady in the audience with beads" is San Francisco ingenue Edna Purviance who Chaplin had discovered working in the bay area as a stenographer. Edna became Chaplin's off- screen sweetheart as well as the object of his affections in several silents.
