Chapter 4 - Spark Paige The clock in the classroom chimed 2:55, I was literally about to jump out of my seat. I was so anxious to go to Dr. Cohen research study and time just felt like it was going painfully slow. I couldn't wait to finally see if this study will actually help me gain something I've never lost but had to mourn its absence. Finally the clock rang, letting us all know it was 3 o' clock and class was over. As I ran towards the direction of the doorway I almost knocked everyone down with my walking stick. As I headed out unto the crisp New York air I heard a familiar voice called my name. It was my mother, I walked toward where her voice came from and then I felt her hand on my shoulder pulling me into a hug. Mom- You ready to go? Paige- Yeah, mom I'm so excited lets go. She held my hand and led me to the car. I closed up my walking stick as she helped me into the passenger seat. I heard my car door close and seconds later I heard another one open letting me know my mom was in the driver's seat already. We sped off into the busy New York streets, after what I believe was like 15 minutes I felt the car go on reverse, meaning my mom luckily found a parking spot in the busy street. Then my mom told me we're here and she helped me out of the car. She held my hand and we started to walk for a bit. I knew we were there when my walking stick bump into a door frame. My mom opened the door and led me in; I heard her talking to a security guard, asking for Dr. Cohens laboratory, the man spoke in a deep voice directing us into the elevator and to the fifth floor. We did as he said and got in the elevator, once we got out a strong odor of sanitizer filled the air. We walked down a long empty hallway and then my mom opened a door. We went in and I heard my mom talking to a lady. Mom- Hi, were here to see Mr. Nicholas Jonas? Lady- Oh yes, he will be here shortly, please have a seat. Mom- Thank you. Nick I came from lunch and went straight into my office; I hung up my leather jacket and quickly put on my white laboratory jacket. Mary, the laboratory secretary told me that two ladies were waiting for me. I walked over to the waiting area; an older woman stood up and presented herself Mom- Hi, are you Mr. Nicholas Jonas? Nick- Hi, yes I am please call me Nick Mom- Of course, hi Nick I'm Joanna I'm Paige's mom, you spoke with her yesterday. Nick- yes, I remember, nice to meet you. (they shake hands) and you must be Paige. As soon as I said those words the girl that was sitting down rose her head up and stood up excitedly. She flashed a smile somewhat towards my direction and put out her hand. I got good look at her and she was beautiful. She had long jet black hair, with beautiful gray eyes; her eyes just screamed out hope and frustration all at the same time. She slowly but surely put me in a trance; I quickly regained my composure and shook her hand. Paige- Yeah, I'm Paige nice to finally meet you Mr. Jonas. Nick- (smiles) what did I say before, please call me Nick, Mr. Jonas makes me feel old and we look like we are about the same age. How old are you? Paige- I'm 19. (flashes a smiles) She has a beautiful smile; I was completely smitten by her. I couldn't believe that such a beautiful girl had to grow up without the gift of sight. Nick- Okay, see I'm 21 so please call me Nick. Paige- Okay, Nick. I spoke to her mother and she agreed to come and pick her up when we were done with the interview and some studies to see if she was compatible for our research. Before she left she spoke to Paige and gave her a hug and kiss. We were finally alone. Nick - So, are you ready? Paige- Totally, I'm kind of nervous though. (smiles nervously) Nick- Don't worry everything will be fine trust me. Paige- Okay. Nick - Okay, so let's go on to my office so I can ask you some questions, grab my hand. Paige- Okay. (reaches out her hand) I grabbed her hand, her hand was soft and if by instinct I rubbed my thumb in between her thumb and index finger.
